In 2016, Portugal achieved their first major tournament victory when they stunned hosts France to win the European Championships Final. Led by manager Fernando Santos, they managed to end the tournament undefeated despite only winning one game in 90 minutes. It was a reversal of their role in the 2004 Championships when, as the strongly favoured host nation, they lost the final to the unfancied Greece, who were also winning their first major tournament.
While the Euro 2016 win was seen by many as a surprise, that belies the form of the Portuguese as they had reached a minimum of the quarter finals ever since 1996 and boast one of the world’s greatest ever players in Cristiano Ronaldo.
With a population of just over 10
million, Portugal have produced many top quality players in recent times with
the likes of Pepe, Luis Figo, Deco, Nani and most recently Renato Sanches who
has just moved to Bayern Munich. However, when ever you think of Portugual, 2
big names spring to mind - Cristiano Ronaldo and Eusebio. Eusebio spearheaded
Portugal to their best ever finish in a World Cup in 1966 where they finished
third. What was even more remarkable was
that this was their first appearance at a major tournament. He scored 41 goals
in 64 games for his country and is widely regarded as one of the greatest of
all time.
Cristiano Ronaldo, the current holder of the Ballon D'or is the most capped player for Portugal as well as being the all-time top goalscorer. At Euro 2016, he also equalled Michel Platini's record of most goals scored in the competition.
Portugal’s home shirt has always stayed in line with the country's colours represented on the flag. The shirt is predominantly a deep red and has green piping.
One of the most famous Portugal
home jerseys of recent times was the Euro 2004 jersey. The tournament was
Cristiano Ronaldo’s first and it was at this tournament that Nike produced
their best template in many years, with a unique circle around the front number
of the shirt.
Portugal tend to rotate between green or red shorts and socks to complete the look for their home strip.
The Portuguese away shirt has been various different colours over the years such as black, white and most recently a glowing green.
Traditionally, black jerseys have sold the best for us, however this was unsurprisingly surpassed by sales of the victorious Euro 2016 away kit.
It is hardly a surprise that for many years, Cristiano Ronaldo Portugal shirts are one of our best selling international football shirts. With our outstanding printing service, you can have Ronaldo's name printed on both adults and children's shirts with his iconic number 7. Official name and numbers are available for our full range of Portugal kits. All of this adds up to a perfect gift for any Portuguese national who loves the beautiful game!
In 1980, Portugal started a 14 year association with Adidas who supplied their kit throughout this period. In 1995, they moved to Olympic, a sports brand based in Belgium. However, this turned out to only be a short term measure as in 1998, they moved to Nike where they have remained ever since.
