Manchester United are the most
successful team of the Premier League. Since the inception of the Premier
League in 1992, they have won the division more times than any other club.
During this time, they won a historic treble in 1999 and famously won the
league in 95/96 when Alan Hansen, a Liverpool legend turned pundit claimed you
would never 'win anything with kids'. This team are still remembered today as
the 'Class of 92' which included some legends of the modern game such as David
Beckham, Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs.
The Old Trafford turf has been graced by some of the greatest players of any generation - the likes of George Best, Cristiano Ronaldo, Eric Cantona, Sir Bobby Charlton, Wayne Rooney and more recently Zlatan Ibrahimovic have all dawned the famous red jersey. With over 600 million fans worldwide, the United shirt has always been a top seller and has no signs of slowing up any time soon.
During the wars, United didn't have such a successful time on the pitch and experimented with alternative strips. It wasn't until just before the start of the second World War when United settled on, what is now, an iconic red home shirt. The 1992-94 home shirt with the smart lace up white collar helped United to win their first title in 26 years and was also the strip that helped them to a double win in 1994.
The home shirt is always red and
is worn with white shorts and black socks.
The away kit has been variable in recent years with United mainly settling for Navy, Black or White. An all black away strip in the 93/94 season was the first of its kind and saw a relaxation of the rules allowing teams to wear such shirts in the Premier League. In the 2001/02 season, Manchester United famously produced a reversible shirt of White and Gold - this allowed fans to purchase their away kit and 3rd shirt at once. This was popular amongst the United fans but hasn't been repeated since.
One of the most infamous kits was the famous grey kit. With United trailing to Southampton, Sir Alex Ferguson demanded the kit be changed at half time as he felt the players couldn’t see each other. Suffice to say, it was never seen again!
In the early days where United were previously known as Newton Heath, they had a green and gold top. However, it wasn't until 1902 when John Henry Davies invested in the club, changed its name to Manchester United, the club colours would change to red. Ever since then apart from a couple of brief spells, the home shirt has always been the iconic red most commonly associated with the Red Devils.
In 2008, 50 years on from the
Munich Air Disaster, Manchester United played against Manchester City in a
Premier League matched where they dawned an exact replica of the shirt worn by
the Busby Babes.
United have had a number of kit suppliers, with Umbro backing the club in the 1990’s, including the famous Champions League victory over Bayern Munich in 1999. The club then embarked on a long and successful partnership with Nike. However, in 2015, Adidas signed up to become Man United's new kit manufacturer in a world record £750m 10 year deal.
