Bayern Munich are the largest and most dominant football team in Germany, winning a record number of Bundesliga titles and more European Cups than any of their domestic rivals. The club are a true European superpower and are in the top 5 revenue generating clubs in the world. Nicknamed FC Hollywood by many due to the amount of times the club feature in the gossip column of newspapers, the club have had a number of superstars play for them over the years including Jurgen Klinsmann, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Thomas Muller and Robert Lewandowski.
The club play their home fixtures at the Allianz Arena and have a fan base which has over 100,000 members. They moved from their previous home of the Olympic Stadium in 2005 into the new arena which was built as part of Germany’s hosting of the 2006 FIFA World Cup.
When the club was formed, Bayern actually began their history wearing white shirts with black socks. In 1905, after joining MSC, they switched to wearing red shorts but retained the white shirt and this was the predominant colour for much of Bayern’s early history.
It was only in the 1968-69 season that Bayern switched to red, however this was a red and blue striped jersey, similar to the home kit of Barcelona. In 1971, the blue was changed to white, similar to the jersey of Atletico Madrid. It seemed they could not make up their mind as in 1973 returned to an all-white kit, however from 1974 they settled on a red home shirt and this has been the predominant colour for most of Bayern’s recent history.
During the mid-90’s, the club briefly revived the red and blue colour scheme and the 1993 season, featuring the likes of Klinsmann and Steffan Effenberg, saw one of the most memorable jerseys as the famous red jersey introduced blue diagonal half stripes.
Although mostly preferring an all red kit, Bayern have sporadically released kits with a nod to their history. In 2010 they wore a red and striped kit and in 2014-15, released a red and blue striped jersey which was a stunning looking kit and proved to be an extremely popular seller.
The Bayern Munich away jerseys are generally white or black and are often rotated each season with the third kit, or Champions League kit as it is often known. The detailing of the white kits often pays homage to the club’s history.
During the 1980’s and 1990’s, Bayern Munich wore a special away kit when facing FC Kaiserslautern. The jersey was in the Brazilian colours of blue and yellow and was a result of the difficulty the club faced in getting a positive result against their rivals, so they worse this out of superstition.
Bayern have a long standing partnership with German sports giants Adidas. As one of the biggest football clubs not just in Germany but the world, the demand for Bayern Munich clothing and merchandise is huge. To satisfy the demand of supporters, Bayern release wide range of gear which extends far beyond the replica shirts, shorts and socks.
One of the most popular items is the Bayern Munich polo shirt which is available in a number of different colours. Tracksuits – available in adults and childrens sizes – are also extremely strong sellers as are training jerseys, hoodies and sweat tops.
